| Wadabagei A Journal of the Caribbean and its Diaspora ISSN 1091-5753 |
| Wadabagei is a Garifuna name for the conch shell which is frequently used as a wake-up call in Caribbean villages and to announce community gatherings. It is symbolic of the historic call to action by Haitian slaves and the Caribbean peoples, continuing struggle for self-expression and self determination. | |

MISSION STATEMENT AND EDITORIAL OBJECTIVES
In the academy in the United States of America, the study of the Caribbean and its Diaspora is under-served and under-represented. For example, there are few departments and programs and just a sprinkling of courses devoted to the study of the Caribbean and its Diaspora. As a consequence, this area of study suffers from benign neglect.
Cognizant of this reality, the Caribbean Research Center at Medgar Evers College - City University of New York (CUNY), in celebration of its tenth anniversary and with its vision on the new millennium and beyond, has taken on the challenge to publish WADABAGEI to fill this vacuum and to address and redress this problem.
WADABAGEI is a multi-disciplinary journal that is committed to the publishing of scholarly articles and creative works on the Caribbean and its Diaspora. It is also committed to facilitating the exchange of ideas among Caribbean scholars worldwide.
In this endeavor, it will place special emphasis on the acculturation of Caribbean people in the USA, Canada and the United Kingdom. It will also examine aspects of the Caribbean and its Diaspora that have been dynamic in shaping the experiences of the broader Caribbean, but which have not been sufficiently emphasized in the academy in the United States of America and worldwide.
